| Restoration Process
There are few things more satisfying than taking an old, In a full restoration the piano is completely disassembled and then put back together with the utmost care, repairing or replacing parts where necessary.
The goal is that the piano will look and sound the way it did when it first came out of the factory - or better!
The soundboard and bridges are either repaired or replaced, then refinished with beautiful clear lacquer. The pinblock is repaired or replaced. The gold harp is cleaned and refinished in bright gold lacquer, matching the original color. All the hardware (screws, hinges, pedals, etc.) is removed, cleaned and re-plated. Then the 230 bright new strings and tuning pins are installed. Meanwhile, the outside body of the piano is being refinished to restore the original rich depth of sheen and beauty to the grain. Finally, the various moving parts in the piano, called the "action", are restored or replaced as is necessary to insure even, velvety-smooth touch and round, full tone.
All the working elements of the piano are then carefully adjusted to create a piano that sings with rich, lyrical tone and responds wonderfully to the fingers. The result: a piano that looks as good, sounds as good and feels as good under the fingers as the day it was made! And a piano that, instead of being destined for the landfill, will now bring decades of musical joy to those who are fortunate enough to play it! The results are tremendously gratifying, which is why so many people prefer to restore their vintage or heirloom piano rather than replace it with a new piano with little character of family history.
