Meticulous Piano Restoration

Many instruments come to us far diminished from their former glory.  We delight in lovingly and carefully returning the piano to new condition (and often, with the aid of computer analysis and modern technology, we can make it perform better than it was when new!).

The carefully restored piano should look like it did when new, and the tone and touch should be as good - or better! - than when it was new.  This takes great skill and painstaking attention to detail and can run anywhere from $3,000 to $45,000, depending on the instrument and the wishes of the owner.  The results are extremely gratifying, adding decades of music-making ability to the instrument.  Few things are as satisfying as taking a battered old instrument, worn down by 80 years of use, and restoring it to better-than-new condition!

Below is a short slide show of some examples of our restoration work.  The slides should advance automatically about every 10 seconds, or you can use the controls.  Please let us know if you have problems getting it to run.

Restoration Process

There are few things more satisfying than taking an old, In a full restoration the piano is completely disassembled and then put back together with the utmost care, repairing or replacing parts where necessary.

The goal is that the piano will look and sound the way it did when it first came out of the factory - or better!

The soundboard and bridges are either repaired or replaced, then refinished with beautiful clear lacquer.  The pinblock is repaired or replaced.  The gold harp is cleaned and refinished in bright gold lacquer, matching the original color.  All the hardware (screws, hinges, pedals, etc.) is removed, cleaned and re-plated.  Then the 230 bright new strings and tuning pins are installed.

Meanwhile, the outside body of the piano is being refinished to restore the original rich depth of sheen and beauty to the grain.  Finally, the various moving parts in the piano, called the "action", are restored or replaced as is necessary to insure even, velvety-smooth touch and round, full tone.

All the working elements of the piano are then carefully adjusted to create a piano that sings with rich, lyrical tone and responds wonderfully to the fingers.

The result: a piano that looks as good, sounds as good and feels as good under the fingers as the day it was made!  And a piano that, instead of being destined for the landfill, will now bring decades of musical joy to those who are fortunate enough to play it!  The results are tremendously gratifying, which is why so many people prefer to restore their vintage or heirloom piano rather than replace it with a new piano with little character of family history.
